"The good: The pay`s good, it`s a chance to live in a foreign country and be well taken care of, to travel to a part of the world it would otherwise be hard to see.
The bad: The work is generally boring, mostly just about being the token foreigner in a conservative, stifling Japanese institution like a school, board of ed. office or municipal gov`t office. Although conditions and work situations vary considerably, you should generally expect that you`re only there to put in time. Idealists & world-changers need not apply.
The ugly: Life on the JET programme, despite being cushy, can drive people bananas. Crushing conformity & boredom at work plus loads of time on your hands either at the office or at home can spell trouble for some. JET participants tend to group together and form cliques that are as conformist as any Japanese grouping. At best, JET is a nice easy overseas lark for a year or a few years. At worst, it`s a dehumanizing mindf&ck. "
